Appearance:Known for his meagre and slim physique, his thin ragged mousy-brown hair, pointed features and a limp Rumpelstiltskin was never a man of any note and would often be at the receiving end of taunts, criticism and insults. And when word spread of his weak heart, people took pleasure in the fact that he seemed to embody cowardice and weakness and the taunts only grew and grew over time. However, since then he has come into possession of a weapon far greater than any can begin to understand and it's hold over him has twisted his appearance as it has twisted his heart.
Now mothers tell stories to their children of a hideous monster, a savage creature- many disagree as to whether he is part lizard or part demon. But they can all agree that he is the most hideous thing that walks the face of the earth. His skin is a repulsively rough texture and coloured murky grey-green with pale spots littering his face. His eyes a beady grey and brown colour that look as though they would look better on an animal than a man. His hair that used to hang limp by his face has now turned to wild brown curls, though Rumpelstiltskin will often brush his hair down to give himself a more sophisticated look even if he is hideous beast. Even his nails have turned to an off-green shade as though he were rotting.
Personality: Cowardly, power-hungry and mad are all words that have been used to describe Rumpelstiltskin and who is he to deny those accusations? Deep down, Rumpelstiltskin knows that despite all of his efforts, he has grown into the man that his father was before him. But the truth of it all is too much for Rumpelstiltskin to come to terms with and so he lies to himself so convincingly that he thinks himself as nothing like his father. The knowledge and power thrust upon him as he took on the title of the Dark One was enough to slowly yet surely drive him slightly mad and he takes a childish pleasure in watching others stumble along their paths blindly whilst he tugs at the strings of fate.
Through the many years he has lived, he has developed an extraordinary patience and if there is something that he wants, he has no trouble in waiting for it. However whilst he is patient in waiting for what he seeks, he doesn't have much patience with others and should he not be interested in what they have to offer him, then he is all too happy to send them away without a second thought.
Aside from his skill with magic, Rumpelstiltskin uses both cunning and wit to outmanoeuvre his enemies and does so very effectively. For even before he became the Dark One, he was quite an intelligent young boy- perhaps lacking in a proper education and upbringing but intelligent and cunning nonetheless. He has also been praised for his silvertongue- meaning that he has a certain way with words that can be very persuasive and makes it easy for him to trick others into signing deals that are generally much more useful to him.
Though there are two things that keep him from descending into complete madness and power lust- and those are two people who have touched him in his life: Baelfire and Belle. His endless search for his son continues though he is still no closer to getting to him before and he believes to have lost Belle. Background: Rumpelstiltskin was born to Malcolm, a low-born commoner who made his money from tricking others with a card game on the streets. Rumpelstiltskin was too young to know what had happened to his mother and every time he'd ask his father he'd get a different response as to what happened to her. He did not live an easy lifestyle as a young boy and watched time after time his father trick, deceive, disappoint and cower in fear as he grovelled for what scraps he and his son could live off. When his father's earnings were stolen after his father failed to trick one of his 'clients', Rumpelstiltskin was left with a pair of wool spinners which is where he discovered his talent at using a spinning wheel.
What little family Rumpelstiltskin had in his youth, is now lost to him as well, for his father renounced him in exchange for eternal youth in Neverland, his wife Milah died after she left Rumpelstiltskin to travel with Captain Hook and then his son Baelfire was lost to him after Rumpelstiltskin was too afraid to travel with him to the Land Without Magic. And it was after this act of cowardice that the Blue Fairy who gave Baelfire the bean cursed Rumpelstiltskin by not allowing him to travel through the portal to where his son is until he shares true love's kiss.

And becoming the most powerful sorcerer in all the magical realms and being amongst the most knowledgeable, Rumpelstiltskin soon grew to have quite a fearsome reputation amongst his village. And this taste of glory and power that he had never before had was something he instantly fell in love with- and it was this love that grew into an obsession which was the beginning of his undoing.
It first lost him his son and received Rumpelstiltskin banishment from A Land Without Magic until he redeemed himself by proving that he could love another and perform an action of true self-sacrifice. Since then, Rumpelstiltskin moved to a large castle where he has been collecting trinkets, increasing in his power and gently tugging at the strings of fate so that he could acquire enough power to break the Blue Fairy's banishment. However in his quest to find a way to enter a Land Without Magic, he disregarded all too quickly the terms of the Blue Fairy, for who could love such a hideous beast?
Well the answer soon came to him in the form of a serving girl named Belle whom he put in his service as a maid. Though never in his wildest of dreams would he have imagined that she could ever love him. Though he was loathe to admit it, he had actually grown very fond of Belle and soon his admiration for her had turned into love. And when he was but seconds from kissing Belle and breaking the Blue Fairy's banishment- once more, he let his love of power and magic get in the way and he pulled away.
He did not see Belle after then and was soon told that Belle was dead.
No one could have imagined the beast had a heart, but that day it was shattered into a thousand pieces. And all of Rumpelstiltskin's hopes of breaking the Fairy's banishment with love vanished and he continued once more on the search to find absolute power so he might render the Fairy's banishment null.
Though when he saw a vision of a saviour- a being more powerful than he could imagine and the child of Snow White and Prince Charming, Rumpelstiltskin was quick to let himself get caught by Snow and Charming and bided his time waiting for the child to be born. What he had not foreseen however, was someone getting to the saviour before he did. And now his hunt is on for a way to get to A Land Without Magic no matter what it might take.
